Item A Ball and Beam Module for a Haptic Paddle Education Platform(ASME, 2017) Rose, Chad G.; Bucki, Nathan; O’Malley, Marcia K.Single degree of freedom force-feedback mechatronic devices, often called haptic paddles, are used in university curriculum as well as massive open online courses (MOOCs). While devices differ based on the goals of a given course, broadly speaking they provide hands-on learning for students studying mechatronics and dynamics. We introduce the third iteration of the Haptic Paddle at Rice University, which has been modified to improve haptic performance and robustness. The modifications to the design increased device up time as well as the devices Z-width. The performance improvement enables the addition of experimental plants to the haptic paddle base, which can be directed at advanced dynamics and controls courses, or special topics in mechatronics and haptics. The first module, a Haptic Ball and Beam, adds an underactuated plant for teleoperation or more complex control structures, and a testbed for haptic motor learning experiments in undergraduate coursework.Item A cable-based series elastic actuator with conduit sensor for wearable exoskeletons(IEEE, 2017) Blumenschein, Laura H.; McDonald, Craig G.; O’Malley, Marcia K.There is currently a scarcity of wearable robotic devices that can practically provide physical assistance in a range of real world activities. Soft wearable exoskeletons, or exosuits, have the potential to be more portable and less restrictive than their rigid counterparts. In this paper, we present the design of an actuation system that has been optimized for use in a soft exosuit for the human arm. The selected design comprises a DC motor and gearbox, a flexible cable conduit transmission, and a custom series elastic force sensor. Placed in series with the transmission conduit, the custom compliant force sensor consists of a translational steel compression spring with a pair of Hall effect sensors for measuring deflection. The custom sensor is validated as an accurate means of measuring cable tension, and it is shown that it can be used in feedback to control the cable tension with high bandwidth. The dynamic effect of the cable-conduit transmission on the force felt at the user interface is characterized by backdriving the system as it renders a range of virtual impedances to the user. We conclude with recommendations for the integration of such an actuation system into a full wearable exosuit.Item A Comprehensive Probabilistic Framework to Learn Air Data from Surface Pressure Measurements(Hindawi, 2015) Srivastava, Ankur; Meade, Andrew J.Use of probabilistic techniques has been demonstrated to learn air data parameters from surface pressure measurements. Integration of numerical models with wind tunnel data and sequential experiment design of wind tunnel runs has been demonstrated in the calibration of a flush air data sensing anemometer system. Development and implementation of a metamodeling method, Sequential Function Approximation (SFA), are presented which lies at the core of the discussed probabilistic framework. SFA is presented as a tool capable of nonlinear statistical inference, uncertainty reduction by fusion of data with physical models of variable fidelity, and sequential experiment design. This work presents the development and application of these tools in the calibration of FADS for a Runway Assisted Landing Site (RALS) control tower. However, the multidisciplinary nature of this work is general in nature and is potentially applicable to a variety of mechanical and aerospace engineering problems.Item A Comprehensive Set of Impact Data for Common Aerospace Metals(ASME, 2017) Brake, M.R.W.; Reu, P.L.; Aragon, D.S.The results of two sets of impact experiments are reported within. To assist with model development using the impact data reported, the materials are mechanically characterized using a series of standard experiments. The first set of impact data comes from a series of coefficient of restitution (COR) experiments, in which a 2 m long pendulum is used to study “in-context” measurements of the coefficient of restitution for eight different materials (6061-T6 aluminum, phosphor bronze alloy 510, Hiperco, nitronic 60A, stainless steel 304, titanium, copper, and annealed copper). The coefficient of restitution is measured via two different techniques: digital image correlation (DIC) and laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV). Due to the strong agreement of the two different methods, only results from the digital image correlation are reported. The coefficient of restitution experiments are in context as the scales of the geometry and impact velocities are representative of common features in the motivating application for this research. Finally, a series of compliance measurements are detailed for the same set of materials. The compliance measurements are conducted using both nano-indentation and micro-indentation machines, providing sub-nm displacement resolution and μN force resolution. Good agreement is seen for load levels spanned by both machines. As the transition from elastic to plastic behavior occurs at contact displacements on the order of 30 nm, this data set provides a unique insight into the transitionary region.Item A computational framework for simultaneous estimation of muscle and joint contact forces and body motion using optimization and surrogate modeling(Elsevier, 2018) Eskinazi, Ilan; Fregly, Benjamin J.Concurrent estimation of muscle activations, joint contact forces, and joint kinematics by means of gradient-based optimization of musculoskeletal models is hindered by computationally expensive and non-smooth joint contact and muscle wrapping algorithms. We present a framework that simultaneously speeds up computation and removes sources of non-smoothness from muscle force optimizations using a combination of parallelization and surrogate modeling, with special emphasis on a novel method for modeling joint contact as a surrogate model of a static analysis. The approach allows one to efficiently introduce elastic joint contact models within static and dynamic optimizations of human motion. We demonstrate the approach by performing two optimizations, one static and one dynamic, using a pelvis-leg musculoskeletal model undergoing a gait cycle. We observed convergence on the order of seconds for a static optimization time frame and on the order of minutes for an entire dynamic optimization. The presented framework may facilitate model-based efforts to predict how planned surgical or rehabilitation interventions will affect post-treatment joint and muscle function.Item A computational method for estimating trunk muscle activations during gait using lower extremity muscle synergies(Frontiers Media S.A., 2022) Li, Geng; Ao, Di; Vega, Marleny M.; Shourijeh, Mohammad S.; Zandiyeh, Payam; Chang, Shuo-Hsiu; Lewis, Valerae O.; Dunbar, Nicholas J.; Babazadeh-Naseri, Ata; Baines, Andrew J.; Fregly, Benjamin J.; Rice Computational Neuromechanics LaboratoryOne of the surgical treatments for pelvic sarcoma is the restoration of hip function with a custom pelvic prosthesis after cancerous tumor removal. The orthopedic oncologist and orthopedic implant company must make numerous often subjective decisions regarding the design of the pelvic surgery and custom pelvic prosthesis. Using personalized musculoskeletal computer models to predict post-surgery walking function and custom pelvic prosthesis loading is an emerging method for making surgical and custom prosthesis design decisions in a more objective manner. Such predictions would necessitate the estimation of forces generated by muscles spanning the lower trunk and all joints of the lower extremities. However, estimating trunk and leg muscle forces simultaneously during walking based on electromyography (EMG) data remains challenging due to the limited number of EMG channels typically used for measurement of leg muscle activity. This study developed a computational method for estimating unmeasured trunk muscle activations during walking using lower extremity muscle synergies. To facilitate the calibration of an EMG-driven model and the estimation of leg muscle activations, EMG data were collected from each leg. Using non-negative matrix factorization, muscle synergies were extracted from activations of leg muscles. On the basis of previous studies, it was hypothesized that the time-varying synergy activations were shared between the trunk and leg muscles. The synergy weights required to reconstruct the trunk muscle activations were determined through optimization. The accuracy of the synergy-based method was dependent on the number of synergies and optimization formulation. With seven synergies and an increased level of activation minimization, the estimated activations of the erector spinae were strongly correlated with their measured activity. This study created a custom full-body model by combining two existing musculoskeletal models. The model was further modified and heavily personalized to represent various aspects of the pelvic sarcoma patient, all of which contributed to the estimation of trunk muscle activations. This proposed method can facilitate the prediction of post-surgery walking function and pelvic prosthesis loading, as well as provide objective evaluations for surgical and prosthesis design decisions.Item A consistency analysis of phase-locked-loop testing and control-based continuation for a geometrically nonlinear frictional system(Elsevier, 2022) Abeloos, G.; Müller, F.; Ferhatoglu, E.; Scheel, M.; Collette, C.; Kerschen, G.; Brake, M.R.W.; Tiso, P.; Renson, L.; Krack, M.Two of the most popular vibration testing methods for nonlinear structures are control-based continuation and phase-locked-loop testing. In this paper, they are directly compared on the same benchmark system, for the first time, to demonstrate their general capabilities and to discuss practical implementation aspects. The considered system, which is specifically designed for this study, is a slightly arched beam clamped at both ends via bolted joints. It exhibits a pronounced softening–hardening behavior as well as an increasing damping characteristic due to the frictional clamping. Both methods are implemented to identify periodic responses at steady-state constituting the phase-resonant backbone curve and nonlinear frequency response curves. To ensure coherent results, the repetition variability is thoroughly assessed via an uncertainty analysis. It is concluded that the methods are in excellent agreement, taking into account the inherent repetition variability of the system.Item A finite element model for magnetohydrodynamic squeeze-film flows(AIP Publishing LLC, 2018) Wagner, Jordan R.; Higgs, C. Fred IIIA computational model is developed to analyze magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) squeeze-film flows featuring an electrically conducting fluid subjected to imposed magnetic and electric fields. The model is based on the so-called MHD Reynolds equation for squeeze-films—an extension of the classical hydrodynamic Reynolds equation. A complete derivation of the MHD Reynolds equation is performed by applying thin-film and quasi-steady assumptions to the Maxwell/Navier-Stokes system coupled by the Lorentz force. The resulting equation is a two-dimensional and variable-coefficient Poisson equation for pressure, which reduces to the purely hydrodynamic form in the limit of vanishing Hartmann number. A geometric calculus formulation facilitates the reduction of the mathematical system into two dimensions, which is a challenge in standard vector calculus due to the cross product. The model permits realistic geometrical representations of the constraining squeeze-surfaces, and we demonstrate the use of a multi-variate Weierstrass-Mandelbrot fractal to numerically generate scale-invariant surface roughness profiles. Ultimately, the governing equation is solved with the Galerkin finite element method. Several numerical examples are conducted to highlight some of the model’s capabilities. MHD forces—as well as the roughness, geometry, and topology of the squeeze surfaces—are shown to significantly influence flow characteristics.Item A general-purpose IGA mesh generation method: NURBS Surface-to-Volume Guided Mesh Generation(Springer Nature, 2024) Kuraishi, Takashi; Takizawa, Kenji; Tezduyar, Tayfun E.The NURBS Surface-to-Volume Guided Mesh Generation (NSVGMG) is a general-purpose mesh generation method, introduced to increase the scope of isogeometric analysis in computing complex-geometry problems. In the NSVGMG, NURBS patch surface meshes serve as guides in generating the patch volume meshes. The interior control points are determined independent of each other, with only a small subset of the surface control points playing a role in determining each interior point. In the updated version of the NSVGMG we are introducing in this article, in the process of determining the location of an interior point in a parametric direction, more weight is given to the closer guides, with the closeness measured along the guides in the other parametric directions. Tests with 2D and 3D shapes show the effectiveness of the NSVGMG in generating good quality meshes, and the robustness of the updated NSVGMG even in mesh generation for complex shapes with distorted boundaries.Item A hierarchical classification of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: Identifying the distinguishing features in 3D spinal deformities(Public Library of Science, 2019) Pasha, Saba; Hassanzadeh, Pedram; Ecker, Malcolm; Ho, VictorThis study aimed to identify the differentiating parameters of the spinal curves’ 2D projections through a hierarchical classification of the 3D spinal curve in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). A total number of 103 right thoracic left lumbar pre-operative AIS patients were included retrospectively and consecutively. A total number of 20 non-scoliotic adolescents were included as the control group. All patients had biplanar X-rays and 3D reconstructions of the spine. The 3D spinal curve was calculated by interpolating the center of vertebrae and was isotropically normalized. A hierarchical classification of the normalized spinal curves was developed to group the patients based on the similarity of their 3D spinal curve. The spinal curves’ 2D projections and clinical spinal measurements in the three anatomical planes were then statistically compared between these groups and between the scoliotic subtypes and the non-scoliotic controls. A total of 5 patient groups of right thoracic left lumbar AIS patients were identified. The characteristics of the posterior-anterior and sagittal views of the spines were: Type 1: Normal sagittal profile and S shape axial view. T1 is leveled or tilted to the right in the posterior view. Type 2: Hypokyphotic and a V shape axial view. T1 is tilted to the left in the posterior view. Type 3: Hypokyphotic (only T5-T10) and frontal imbalance, S shape axial view. T1 is leveled or tilted to the right, and 3 frontal curves. Type 4: Flat sagittal profile (T1-L2), slight frontal imbalance with a V shape axial view, T1 tilted to the left. Type 5: flat sagittal profile and forward trunk shift with a proximal kyphosis and S shape axial view. T1 is leveled or tilted to the right. In conclusion, a hierarchical classification of the 3D scoliotic spine allowed identifying various distinguishing features of the spinal curves in patients with a right thoracic curve in an orderly fashion. The subtypes’ characteristics resulting from this 3D classification can be identified from the pairs of the frontal and sagittal spinal curves i.e. X-rays in right thoracic AIS patients.Item A hyperelastic extended Kirchhoff–Love shell model with out-of-plane normal stress: I. Out-of-plane deformation(Springer Nature, 2022) Taniguchi, Yasutoshi; Takizawa, Kenji; Otoguro, Yuto; Tezduyar, Tayfun E.This is the first part of a two-part article on a hyperelastic extended Kirchhoff–Love shell model with out-of-plane normal stress. We present the derivation of the new model, with focus on the mechanics of the out-of-plane deformation. Accounting for the out-of-plane normal stress distribution in the out-of-plane direction affects the accuracy in calculating the deformed-configuration out-of-plane position, and consequently the nonlinear response of the shell. The improvement is beyond what we get from accounting for the out-of-plane deformation mapping. By accounting for the out-of-plane normal stress, the traction acting on the shell can be specified on the upper and lower surfaces separately. With that, the new model is free from the “midsurface” location in terms of specifying the traction. We also present derivations related to the variation of the kinetic energy and the form of specifying the traction and moment acting on the upper and lower surfaces and along the edges. We present test computations for unidirectional plate bending, plate saddle deformation, and pressurized cylindrical and spherical shells. We use the neo-Hookean and Fung’s material models, for the compressible- and incompressible-material cases, and with the out-of-plane normal stress and without, which is the plane-stress case.Item A linear-elasticity-based mesh moving method with no cycle-to-cycle accumulated distortion(Springer Nature, 2021) Tonon, Patrícia; Sanches, Rodolfo André Kuche; Takizawa, Kenji; Tezduyar, Tayfun E.Good mesh moving methods are always part of what makes moving-mesh methods good in computation of flow problems with moving boundaries and interfaces, including fluid–structure interaction. Moving-mesh methods, such as the space–time (ST) and arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) methods, enable mesh-resolution control near solid surfaces and thus high-resolution representation of the boundary layers. Mesh moving based on linear elasticity and mesh-Jacobian-based stiffening (MJBS) has been in use with the ST and ALE methods since 1992. In the MJBS, the objective is to stiffen the smaller elements, which are typically placed near solid surfaces, more than the larger ones, and this is accomplished by altering the way we account for the Jacobian of the transformation from the element domain to the physical domain. In computing the mesh motion between time levels tn and tn+1 with the linear-elasticity equations, the most common option is to compute the displacement from the configuration at tn. While this option works well for most problems, because the method is path-dependent, it involves cycle-to-cycle accumulated mesh distortion. The back-cycle-based mesh moving (BCBMM) method, introduced recently with two versions, can remedy that. In the BCBMM, there is no cycle-to-cycle accumulated distortion. In this article, for the first time, we present mesh moving test computations with the BCBMM. We also introduce a version we call “half-cycle-based mesh moving” (HCBMM) method, and that is for computations where the boundary or interface motion in the second half of the cycle consists of just reversing the steps in the first half and we want the mesh to behave the same way. We present detailed 2D and 3D test computations with finite element meshes, using as the test case the mesh motion associated with wing pitching. The computations show that all versions of the BCBMM perform well, with no cycle-to-cycle accumulated distortion, and with the HCBMM, as the wing in the second half of the cycle just reverses its motion steps in the first half, the mesh behaves the same way.Item A low-cost wearable device for portable sequential compression therapy(Frontiers Media S.A., 2022) Schara, Mark; Zeng, Mingde; Jumet, Barclay; Preston, Daniel J.In 2020, cardiovascular diseases resulted in 25% of unnatural deaths in the United States. Treatment with long-term administration of medication can adversely affect other organs, and surgeries such as coronary artery grafts are risky. Meanwhile, sequential compression therapy (SCT) offers a low-risk alternative, but is currently expensive and unwieldy, and often requires the patient to be immobilized during administration. Here, we present a low-cost wearable device to administer SCT, constructed using a stacked lamination fabrication approach. Expanding on concepts from the field of soft robotics, textile sheets are thermally bonded to form pneumatic actuators, which are controlled by an inconspicuous and tetherless electronic onboard supply of pressurized air. Our open-source, low-profile, and lightweight (140 g) device costs $62, less than one-third the cost the least expensive alternative and one-half the weight of lightest alternative approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), presenting the opportunity to more effectively provide SCT to socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals. Furthermore, our textile-stacking method, inspired by conventional fabrication methods from the apparel industry, along with the lightweight fabrics used, allows the device to be worn more comfortably than other SCT devices. By reducing physical and financial encumbrances, the device presented in this work may better enable patients to treat cardiovascular diseases and aid in recovery from cardiac surgeries.Item A New Imaging Platform for Visualizing Biological Effects of Non-Invasive Radiofrequency Electric-Field Cancer Hyperthermia(Public Library of Science, 2015) Corr, Stuart J.; Shamsudeen, Sabeel; Vergara, Leoncio A.; Ho, Jason Chak-Shing; Ware, Matthew J.; Keshishian, Vazrik; Yokoi, Kenji; Savage, David J.; Meraz, Ismail M.; Kaluarachchi, Warna; Cisneros, Brandon T.; Raoof, Mustafa; Nguyen, Duy Trac; Zhang, Yingchun; Wilson, Lon J.; Summers, Huw; Rees, Paul; Curley, Steven A.; Serda, Rita E.Herein, we present a novel imaging platform to study the biological effects of non-invasive radiofrequency (RF) electric field cancer hyperthermia. This system allows for real-time in vivointravital microscopy (IVM) imaging of radiofrequency-induced biological alterations such as changes in vessel structure and drug perfusion. Our results indicate that the IVM system is able to handle exposure to high-power electric-fields without inducing significant hardware damage or imaging artifacts. Furthermore, short durations of low-power (< 200 W) radiofrequency exposure increased transport and perfusion of fluorescent tracers into the tumors at temperatures below 41°C. Vessel deformations and blood coagulation were seen for tumor temperatures around 44°C. These results highlight the use of our integrated IVM-RF imaging platform as a powerful new tool to visualize the dynamics and interplay between radiofrequency energy and biological tissues, organs, and tumors.Item A node-numbering-invariant directional length scale for simplex elements(World Scientific, 2019) Takizawa, Kenji; Ueda, Yuki; Tezduyar, Tayfun E.Variational multiscale methods, and their precursors, stabilized methods, have been very popular in flow computations in the past several decades. Stabilization parameters embedded in most of these methods play a significant role. The parameters almost always involve element length scales, most of the time in specific directions, such as the direction of the flow or solution gradient. We require the length scales, including the directional length scales, to have node-numbering invariance for all element types, including simplex elements. We propose a length scale expression meeting that requirement. We analytically evaluate the expression in the context of simplex elements and compared to one of the most widely used length scale expressions and show the levels of noninvariance avoided.Item A perspective on climate model hierarchies(Wiley, 2017) Jeevanjee, Nadir; Hassanzadeh, Pedram; Hill, Spencer; Sheshadri, AditiTo understand Earth's climate, climate modelers employ a hierarchy of climate models spanning a wide spectrum of complexity and comprehensiveness. This essay, inspired by the World Climate Research Programme's recent “Model Hierarchies Workshop,” attempts to survey and synthesize some of the current thinking on climate model hierarchies, especially as presented at the workshop. We give a few formal descriptions of the hierarchy and survey the various ways it is used to generate, test, and confirm hypotheses. We also discuss some of the pitfalls of contemporary climate modeling, and how the “elegance” advocated for by Held (2005) has (and has not) been used to address them. We conclude with a survey of current activity in hierarchical modeling, and offer suggestions for its continued fruitful development.Item A predictive model of the temperature-dependent inactivation of coronaviruses(AIP, 2020) Yap, Te Faye; Liu, Zhen; Shveda, Rachel A.; Preston, Daniel J.The COVID-19 pandemic has stressed healthcare systems and supply lines, forcing medical doctors to risk infection by decontaminating and reusing single-use personal protective equipment. The uncertain future of the pandemic is compounded by limited data on the ability of the responsible virus, SARS-CoV-2, to survive across various climates, preventing epidemiologists from accurately modeling its spread. However, a detailed thermodynamic analysis of experimental data on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 and related coronaviruses can enable a fundamental understanding of their thermal degradation that will help model the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigate future outbreaks. This work introduces a thermodynamic model that synthesizes existing data into an analytical framework built on first principles, including the rate law for a first-order reaction and the Arrhenius equation, to accurately predict the temperature-dependent inactivation of coronaviruses. The model provides much-needed thermal decontamination guidelines for personal protective equipment, including masks. For example, at 70 °C, a 3-log (99.9%) reduction in virus concentration can be achieved, on average, in 3 min (under the same conditions, a more conservative decontamination time of 39 min represents the upper limit of a 95% interval) and can be performed in most home ovens without reducing the efficacy of typical N95 masks as shown in recent experimental reports. This model will also allow for epidemiologists to incorporate the lifetime of SARS-CoV-2 as a continuous function of environmental temperature into models forecasting the spread of the pandemic across different climates and seasons.Item A quantitative assessment of the model form error of friction models across different interface representations for jointed structures(Elsevier, 2022) Porter, Justin H.; Balaji, Nidish Narayanaa; Little, Clayton R.; Brake, Matthew R.W.Hysteretic models are widely used to model frictional interactions in joints to recreate experimental behavior. However, it is unclear which models are best suited for fitting or predicting the responses of structures. The present study evaluates 26 friction model/interface representation combinations to quantify the model form error. A Quasi-Static Modal Analysis approach (termed Rayleigh Quotient Nonlinear Modal Analysis) is adopted to calculate the nonlinear system response, and a Multi-Objective Optimization is solved to fit experimental data of the first mode of the Brake-Reuß Beam. Optimized parameters from the first mode are applied to the second and third bending modes to quantify the predictive ability of the models. Formulations for both tracing full hysteresis loops and recreating hysteresis loops from a single loading curve (Masing assumptions) are considered. Smoothly varying models applied to a five patch representation showed the highest flexibility (for fitting mode 1) and good predictive potential (for modes 2 and 3). For a second formulation, which uses 152 frictional elements to represent the interface, the physically motivated spring in series with a Coulomb slip model (elastic dry friction) has high error for fitting mode 1 and performs near the middle for predicting higher modes. For both interface representation, the best fit models are not the most physical, but rather the ones with the most parameters (as expected); however, the more physical models perform somewhat better for predicting the higher modes.Item A reduced Iwan model that includes pinning for bolted joint mechanics(Springer, 2017) Brake, M.R.W.Bolted joints are prevalent in most assembled structures; however, predictive models for their behavior do not exist. Calibrated models, such as the Iwan model, are able to predict the response of a jointed structure over a range of excitations once calibrated at a nominal load. The Iwan model, though, is not widely adopted due to the high computational expense of implementation. To address this, an analytical solution of the Iwan model is derived under the hypothesis that for an arbitrary load reversal, there is a new distribution of dry friction elements, which are now stuck, that approximately resemble a scaled version of the original distribution of dry friction elements. The dry friction elements internal to the Iwan model do not have a uniform set of parameters and are described by a distribution of parameters, i.e., which internal dry friction elements are stuck or slipping at a given load, that ultimately governs the behavior of the joint as it transitions from microslip to macroslip. This hypothesis allows the model to require no information from previous loading cycles. Additionally, the model is extended to include the pinning behavior inherent in a bolted joint. Modifications of the resulting framework are discussed to highlight how the constitutive model for friction can be changed (in the case of an Iwan–Stribeck formulation) or how the distribution of dry friction elements can be changed (as is the case for the Iwan plasticity model). DaneIn a standard design practice, it is often necessary to assemble engineered structures from individually manufactured parts. Ideally, the assembled system should perform as if the connections between the components were perfect, that is, as if the system were a single monolithic piece. However, the fasteners used in those connections, such as mechanical lap joints, are imperfect and highly nonlinear. In particular, these jointed connections dissipate energy, often through friction over highly localized microscale regions near connection points, and are known to exhibit history dependent, or hysteretic behavior. As a result, while mechanical joints are one of the most common elements in structural dynamics problems, their presence implies that assembled structural systems are difficult to model and analyze. Through rigorous experimental, analytical, and numerical work over the past century, researchers from several different disciplines have developed numerous damping models that give rise to the dynamical behavior attributed to joints. This work seeks to review, compare, and contrast several linear and nonlinear damping models that are known to be relevant to modeling assembled structural systems. These models are presented and categorized to place them in the proper historical and mathematical context as well as presenting numerous examples of their applications. General properties of hysteretic friction damping models are also studied and compared analytically. Connections are drawn between the different models so as to not only identify differences between models, but also highlight commonalities not normally seen to be in association.
