Item Can a UX Department Really Make a Difference?(2017-04-03) Vacek, Rachel; Kolah, Debra; Fondren LibraryWhen a library is truly invested in UX, with total awareness of and buy-in on user-centered thinking, its staff more readily embrace UX principles and have more empathy. However, creating a user-centric culture can be challenging as a solo UX Librarian. Wouldn't it be easier with a dedicated department? For this presentation, a panel of UX department heads will discuss organizational buy-in, advocacy and partnerships, and key elements for establishing more structure for UX in libraries.Item Canvas Survey and User Testing, Summer 2015(2015) Kolah, Debra; Yan, HaoItem Collecting to the Core--Physics(2012) Fosmire, Michael; Kolah, Debra; Doherty, AnneColumn Editor’s Note: The “Collecting to the Core” column highlights monographic works that are essential to the academic library within a particular discipline, inspired by the Resources for College Libraries bibliography (online at http://www.rclweb.net). In each essay, subject specialists introduce and explain the classic titles and topics that continue to remain relevant to the undergraduate curriculum and library collection. Disciplinary trends may shift, but some classics never go out of style. — ADItem Deepening the Conversation(2018-07) Kolah, Debra; Thomas, AmandaItem Designing the Fondren Library K-12 Experience: A collaborative project(2014-06-05) Bynog, David; Spiro, Linda; Edwards, Sandi; Kolah, DebraHow do we create an experience that makes a meaningful impression on our school visitors, so that they come to know the value of a research library, and understand how it fits into a university setting? The high school student visitors of today could be the Rice students of tomorrow.Item Discovering Discovery: How Researchers Find the Sources They Need(2011-05-18) Kolah, Debra; LaFlamme, Marcel; Segal, Jane; Krevit, LeahRice University’s current discovery tool, OneSearch, will no longer be supported after 2011. A committee, the Fondren Library Resource Discovery Tools Working Group, co-chaired by Esther Crawford and Jiun Kuo, has been charged with looking at other available discovery tools and providing a recommendation to the Fondren Library Executive team on what tool, if any, should be purchased as a replacement. Fondren Library wants to be the first place where information seekers look for information. The right discovery tool could help Fondren attract and retain users seeking one-stop access to information.Item Establishing fondren@BRC: Insights from a User Study(2010-08) Kolah, Debra; Spiro, LisaRice University’s Bioscience Research Center (BRC) aims to be “a catalyst for new and better ways for researchers to collaborate, explore, learn and lead.”1 With fondren@brc, its new library facility in the BRC, Fondren Library can participate in this collaborative effort and support researchers in producing pioneering new research. Through fondren@brc, the library can explore how to use a flexible library space that focuses on service instead of content, what kind of services to offer to a group of scientists who mainly do their research online, and how to implement embedded librarianship, or the integration of librarians into academic disciplines.Item The Evolving World of E-Science, A report of the IATUL conference, 2010.(2011) Kolah, DebraDebra Kolah attended a conference of the International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries at Purdue University. The assignments required the students to use a third-party web site, PageFlakes and NetVibes, respectively, to create a dynamically updated portal to information they needed for their research and class projects. The use of off-the-shelf web 2.0 technology to enable students to discover the latest information in their subject areas of interest provides an engaging, hands-on environment with immediate feedback on the quality of their searching. The authors provide a basic introduction to the use of the 'portal' web site. Then, the results of using this technique, for graduate students in physics in one case and junior/senior level undergraduates in the other, are analyzed, and recommendations for the integration of this type of assignment in other courses are given.Item Making the Case: Engaging users, stakeholders, and programmers in system changes(Rice University, 2019-11-14) Kolah, Debra; Thomas, AmandaItem Master Class: Mastering the Art of User Experience(2015) Kolah, DebraSession Abstract: It's time to rethink what we know about gathering user data, going beyond surveys and other traditional methods to engage our users in deep conversations around the way they do research in order to develop tools and library resources that support user needs. This session will show you new ways to collect data, understand the stories, and sort the data into actionable items. The content will include an introduction to Lean UX and how it can be integrated into library/info center environments, even when the UX "team" consists of one person.Item Microform User Journey: a selected look at faculty and librarian use of the Kelley Center Microform area(Rice University, 2022-03-31) Kolah, Debra; Reynolds, ReaganItem Research Flow: Understanding the Way Research Happens(2012-08) Kolah, Debra; Rivero, Monica; Ajtai, Rebecca; Focke, Amanda; LaFlamme, Marcel; Spiro, Linda; Crawford, Esther; Segal, Jane; Krevit, Leah; Meyers, Lauren; Miller, JenniferItem Science Librarians Analysis of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics: The Work of Saul Perlmutter, Brian P. Finally, a librarian review was conducted to determine areas that needed further training and education within the catalog.Item UX Toolbox:Using Ethnography to Design Library Services for Scientists(2013) Kolah, DebraEthnography of scientists can provide a rich framework to provide insights to create actionable results that inform library services for research scientists.
