Dr. Richard J. Smith is George and Nancy Rupp Professor of Humanities Emeritus, and a Research Associate at the Chao Center for Asian Studies, Rice University. Professor Smith's areas of expertise and research interests are Chinese intellectual and social history, as well as comparative history (China and Japan). He is currently working on a book-length study titled Magic Matters: Science and Medicine in Chinese Popular Culture, 1600-1800.
