From 2008 through 2016 she was Chief of Hematology-Oncology at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, TX. She is a medical oncologist and former clinical cancer researcher with an interest in radiation effects. She has also facilitated International Healthcare Partnership Programs between Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital of Houston, TX, and countries of former Soviet Republics Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia, funded through the American International Health Alliance (AIHA) under a cooperative agreement with the United States Agency of International Development (USAID).Item Boris Yoffe Video Interview(Rice University, 2020-11-20) Yoffe, Boris; Khemka, SachiBoris Yoffe, MD is Professor of Medicine and Molecular Virology at Baylor College of Medicine. He is a member of the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The research in his laboratory was focused on pathogenesis of virally induced liver diseases. In early years he also was involved in HIV research and his laboratory was one on the first to describe mechanism of immune dysfunction due to death by cytolysis of immune cells (CD4). His work with hepatitis viruses revealed role of hepatitis B extrahepatic infection in chronicity and recurrence of infection following liver transplantation.Item Tom Wheeler Audio Interview(Rice University, 2020-11-22) Wheeler, Tom; Khemka, SachiThomas M. From 2004- 2018 he served as chair of the department and is now a Senior Vice Chair. He serves presently as a member of Medical Advisory Board at Medscape, Insightec, Inc., Nucleai, Inc. and BioFluidica, Inc. Dr. Wheeler is board certified in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and cytopathology and has served 39 years in academia, presently chief of the pathology service at the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston’s Texas Medical Center. Palafox, M.D., M.P.H. is currently Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, and Professor of Cancer Prevention and Control at the University of Hawai’i Cancer Center. He served in the Marshall Islands (RMI) as a physician and medical director of a U.S. funded program to care for the radiation affected people of RMI. He also served as the Principal Investigator for a US Congressionally-mandated program to provide medical care for Marshall Islanders who were exposed to fallout from the Bravo hydrogen bomb detonation in RMI.
