Abstract

This study focuses on the four first-person narratives: Andreï Makine's Le testament français , Romain Gary's La promesse de l'aube , Dai Sijie's Balzac et la Petite Tailleuse chinoise , and Nathalie Sarraute's Enfance . Using the myth of Echo and its strategic ambiguities of identity and language as the point of departure, this analysis identified various theoretical texts by Gilbert Durand, Julia Kristeva, Philippe Lejeune, Milan Kundera, and Mikhail Bakhtine, which focus on similar issues. The application of their analyses to the four literary texts revealed veritable labyrinths of echoes: traumatic childhood memories, rich intertexts, complicated relationships with the Other, and hesitations between two genres.
