Steel pipe for underwater applications may have a concrete jacket as ballast to assist in laying the pipe. The contribution of the concrete jacket to the flexural rigidity of the pipe is analyzed theoretically, and the analysis compared with experimental results. The reasons for deviation of experimental results from theory are considered, and a modified theory suggested. It is concluded that the jacket can furnish some additional flexural rigidity, provided certain conditions are met.
