An experimental investigation is made of the idealized drilling problem of a flat punch loading a horizontal rock surface near a previous crater. Tests are run on a limestone to determine the force required to form a chip and the chip shape as functions of the confining pressure, the inclination of the free surface from the horizontal loaded surface, and the placement or "indexing" distance of the load from the free surface. The results are compared with the theoretical predictions of plastic limit analysis.
