Chronic wounds have a major negative impact on human health. Statistics show that ~2% of the United States population, about 7 million people, suffer from chronic wounds. Globally, it is estimated that chronic wound care costs a total of $3.5 billion. Wound healing is a highly dynamic process, with different phases that require different growth factors and cytokines. Despite this dynamic nature, the current format of wound healing treatments is to use static treatments that do not change over time to encourage wound healing, such as wound vacuums and skin grafts. Although these treatments have shown to help in wound healing, they can still be improved. Here I present my work on developing a dynamic wound-healing patch that utilizes cell-based therapeutics to allow for precise temporal control of the delivery of different cytokines and growth factors into the wound bed.en_US
