Data accompanying Sean Bolks and Richard J. Stoll, “The Arms Acquisition Process: The Effect of Internal and External Constraints on Arms Race Dynamics,” The Journal of Conflict Resolution 44, no. 5 (October 1, 2000): 580–603. This article offers a new approach to understanding the dynamics of arms races. In developing an alternative indicator of military capability, Stoll and Bolks focus on the number of capital ships--warship(s) with the most significant naval combat power. The replication data presented here is from two tables tallying the predicted number of capital ships of the major powers, the first from 1860 to 1939, the second from 1946-1986. Estimates are produced using seemingly unrelated digression (SUR). Data are presented as Stata .dta files, with instructions in .do files. In addition to the Stata source files, this item also contains non-proprietary versions for long-term access; .dta files have been transformed to .csv and .do to .txt.
Original Stata files: table2.dta -- table2.do -- table1.do -- table1.dta. Non-proprietary versions of files: Table2.csv -- table2-dofile.txt -- Table1.csv -- table1-dofile.txt.
Stata was used to create the original versions of the files.
