From Shadow is a nine minute orchestral work which has three main sections. The fast first section is based around a repeated eighth note figure. This figure is first heard in the pizzicato string section at measure 2. Pizzicato is used extensively in the first section and is a feature of the orchestration. Melodic material that is presented late in the first section becomes the basis for the next two sections. The second section is slow and more melodic and the third is fast and loud. The overall climax of the piece occurs at measure 191 which is followed by a codetta.
