CommRad: Jointly Optimized MIMO Communications and Radar
    (2019-11-18) Raymondi, Nate; Sabharwal, Ashutosh
In this thesis, I show that a jointly optimized MIMO base station capable of simultaneous radar estimation and communication can achieve higher parameter estimation accuracy than legacy systems. Current radar and communication systems are designed in isolation (either spatially, temporally, or in operating frequency) to avoid cross-system interference. This causes a strain on the already scarce amount of spectral resources. However, should a radar-communication base station be jointly designed from the ground up, energy that would previously have been considered interference can actually bolster the overall performance. Specifically in this work, I show that sidelobe communications power can be re-purposed by a joint base station to improve radar parameter estimation. I first design an optimal communications transmit precoder for use in the joint system. I then analytically characterize the resulting improved parameter estimation performance in closed-form by deriving the joint Cramer-Rao Bound and joint MIMO Ambiguity Function. Furthermore, I verify through end-to-end simulation that the joint base station achieves higher parameter estimation accuracy than a legacy radar system.
