(Original composition);(1996) Frank, Gabriela Lena; Burt, GeorgeThis is a work that explores the textural and contrapuntal possibilities of limited aleatorism within the context of a string quartet. The tonal center of the piece revolves around the note C which is established in several key places--in the beginning, in the climax in the very middle of the work, and in the very end. Formally, the work's structure is in a rough mirror, or arch form. This piece was inspired by Witold Lutoslawski's String Quartet (1963) not only for the use of limited aleatorism, but also through a loose quote from that particular work of a motive comprised of C octaves in sixteenth notes couplets.Item SHEPHERD SCHOOL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA RICE CHORALE Tuesday, November 30, 2004 8:00 p.m. Stude Concert Hall(Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, 2004-11-30) Varèse, Edgard, 1883-1965; Frank, Gabriela Lena; Brahms, Johannes, 1833-1897; Rachleff, Larry (music director); Jaber, Thomas (music director); Buyse, Leone (flute); Farwell, Joyce (mezzo-soprano)Program: Integrales / Edgard Varese (1883-1965) -- Illapa: Tone Poem for Flute and Orchestra / Gabriela Lena Frank (b. 1972) -- Alto Rhapsody, Op. 53 / Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) -- Schicksalslied, Op. 54 / Johannes Brahms (1833-1897).Item UNDERGRADUATE COMPOSERS' FORUM Tuesday, April 16, 1991 8:00 p.m. in the Shepherd School Recital Hall(Shepherd School of Music, Rice University, 1991-04-16) Howard, Jonathan; O'Connell, Katharine; Schleuse, Paul; Frank, Gabriela Lena; Stein, Joel Henry; Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble; Avera, Kathleen (soprano); Potoczniak, Anthony (piano); Jaubert, Jeanne (cello); McCaffery, Lisa (percussion); Sakakeeny, Ilse (flute); Sakakeeny, Gabriel (baritone); Gunn, Jonathan (clarinet); Frank, Gabriela (piano); Reinhuber, Joachim (piano)Program: I wonder while I wander through a weird wooded wilderness, Jonathan Howard -- Now I Lay, Katharine O'Connell -- Pulse, Paul Schleuse -- Summer Cycle (poems by Emily Dickinson), Paul Schleuse -- Piece for clarinet and piano, Gabriela Lena Frank -- Options a percussion poem for 11 players, Joel Henry Stein.
