Richard J. Smith is George and Nancy Rupp Professor of Humanities and Professor of History at Rice University. Professor Smith's areas of expertise and research interest are Chinese intellectual and social history, as well as comparative history (China and Japan). Professor Smith's current research focuses primarily on Chinese "encyclopedias of daily use" (riyong leishu) in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties.
