RACE AND EVANGELICAL POLITICS - On January 28, the RPLP hosted Richard Mouw, Fuller Theological Seminary; Jason Shelton, University of Texas at Arlington; and Janelle Wong, University of Maryland for a panel on race, politics, and American evangelicalism. The panelists offered their perspectives on the priorities of diverse evangelical voters and discussed the role that these groups will play in the 2020 election. For those who missed the event and want to know more, the recording will be available on the RPLP website soon.

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT SYLLABI - A group of sociologists who teach about religion, including two RPLP fellows, recently completed teaching modules to make it easier for colleagues outside of the subfield to teach short sections about religion in their classes on other subjects. The syllabi are posted here and include background reading, class plans, and suggestions for assessment.

NEXT EVENT IS FEBRUARY 24 - Join Rice University's Boniuk Institute for Religious Tolerance, the RPLP, and other partners for a February 24th talk on the legacy of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Morehouse College’s founding dean of the MLK International Chapel, Dr. Lawrence Carter, will discuss his new book, The Baptist Preacher’s Buddhist Teacher.

RESEARCH ON GOD AND THE BRAIN - Is there a “God spot” in the brain that determines whether you’re hardwired to be religious? New research from RPLP fellows finds that nonbelievers are more likely than the faithful to think that’s true. SCIENTISTS TALK RELIGION AROUND THE GLOBE - If you haven't gotten a chance to read the latest RPLP book, Secularity and Science: What Scientists Around the World Really Think About Religion, two of the authors wrote an op ed summarizing key points and findings relevant for the US context.

FELLOW PUBLISHES IN JAAR - "Whither Whiteness and Religion?: Implications for Theology and the Study of Religion" is co-authored by RPLP postdoctoral fellow Rachel Schneider and published in the Journal of the American Academy of Religion. Given persisting racial inequality and white extremism, the authors argue that whiteness itself needs to be theorized and discussed within the study of religion in ways that do not shy away from explicit discussions of power and racism.
