Current radar and communication systems are designed in isolation (either spatially, temporally, or in operating frequency) to avoid cross-system interference. This causes a strain on the already scarce amount of spectral resources. However, should a radar-communication base station be jointly designed from the ground up, energy that would previously have been considered interference can actually bolster the overall performance. Specifically in this work, I show that sidelobe communications power can be re-purposed by a joint base station to improve radar parameter estimation. I first design an optimal communications transmit precoder for use in the joint system. I then analytically characterize the resulting improved parameter estimation performance in closed-form by deriving the joint Cramer-Rao Bound and joint MIMO Ambiguity Function. Furthermore, I verify through end-to-end simulation that the joint base station achieves higher parameter estimation accuracy than a legacy radar system.application/pdfengCopyright is held by the author, unless otherwise indicated.
