dc.description.abstract | In Les Troyens one can find the embodiment of Berlioz's aesthetic doctrine. He believed that music is most effective when it faithfully reflects and develops the dramatic ideas that are presented in the libretto. In forming his libretto, Berlioz developed his own unique solution to the problem of dramatic unity. He composed only the parts of the text that he considered suitable, thus presenting a series of tableaux on Shakespearean lines. He believed above all else that music must be truthful, and he shaped it to suit the libretto but never subordinated the music to the words and dramatic action. | |
