TWO RPLP ARTICLES IN ETHNIC AND RACIAL STUDIES JOURNAL - "The Very Ivory Tower: Pathways Reproducing Racial-Ethnic Stratification in US Academic Science" was published online earlier this month. RPLP fellows Bob Thomson, Esmeralda Sanchez Salazar, and Elaine Howard Ecklund coauthored the article.
The same journal has also published "Seeing is Achieving: Religion, Embodiment, and Explanations of Racial Inequality in STEM," highlighting the results from another study. Read this article from fellows Dan Bolger and Elaine Howard Ecklund.

NEW ARTICLE - Drawing on 80 in-depth interviews with Indian scientists, the authors found that although science often operates as a global institution, national context influences definitions of religion and spirituality. This latest article from several RPLP fellows has been published by the journal Religions and is available online.

OUR NEWEST TEAM MEMBER - Join us in welcoming postdoctoral fellow Dr. Jacqui Frost, who joined our team on July 1 after receiving her Ph.D. in sociology from University of Minnesota in June. Her dissertation, Modern but Not Meaningless: Nonreligious Cultures and Communities in the United States, investigates the ways that atheists create secular rituals and find community in an “atheist church” called the Sunday Assembly. Her work at RPLP will focus on investigating the growing movement of transhumanism.

CONGRATS TO RECENT GRAD - Michael McDowell worked as an RPLP undergraduate student fellow for the past several years before graduating from Rice in May. Beginning this fall he will be pursuing a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University. In addition, he was selected to receive a Henry-Williams Scholarship from the Duke Divinity School. We are so pleased that Michael will continue his work with the RPLP as a post-baccalaureate researcher this fall during his first semester of graduate school.

FELLOW RECEIVES DUAL FACULTY APPOINTMENT - Our congratulations to Dr. Cleve V. Tinsley IV! Cleve has accepted a dual appointment at Virginia Union University, where he will be an Assistant Professor in Arts and Sciences, teaching across the humanities, and will serve as the Inaugural Director of the Center for African-American History and Culture. Cleve worked with the RPLP for six years as a graduate student fellow and for the past year as a visiting research fellow; he will continue to be involved as a non-resident research fellow. Our congrats again to Cleve!

FORMER POST-BACC FELLOW IS NOW ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - We are excited to announce that Dr. Esther Chan is now an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Esther worked with the RPLP as a post-baccalaureate fellow from 2012 to 2014 before pursuing her Ph.D. in sociology at Yale University. Esther will remain involved as an RPLP non-resident research fellow as she begins her faculty position this fall.

FORMER ADVISOR WINS SERVICE AWARD - Elias Bongmba, a Rice University professor of religion, received the 2020 Hart Service Award from the American Academy of Religion (AAR). Elias served a term on our advisory committee and is an ongoing supporter of the RPLP. We congratulate him on this great honor.
