Introducing Publishing Services

DSS is pleased to announce a new initiative: Library Publishing Services.

Publishing services align with the library's efforts to deepen the impact and visibility of Rice research. The suite of services and resources has been developed to support the creation of scholarly publications created by members of the Rice community. We provide consultations on a wide range of scholarly publishing topics, facilitate the assignment of digital object identifiers (DOIs), and manage several digital publishing platforms.

To learn more about Fondren Library Publishing services, please visit https://library.rice.edu/services/fondren-library-publishing-services.

An overview of services will also be provided during several Zoom sessions (click on date to register):

Fall Open Cafe Schedule

Want to learn more about open access, open educational resources, and open data? Want to share your wins and challenges working in the open? Join Fondren Library staff each month for brief presentations (10-15 minutes) and relaxed, coffeeshop-style chats about “open” topics.

Sessions will be held via Zoom. Click on the links below to register for each session. Descriptions of each session can be found on the DSS blog.

Sessions with fewer than 4 registrants will be canceled.

RDSA Spotlight: Undergrad Theses

The Rice Digital Scholarship Archive (RDSA), Rice's institutional repository, is a web site where the university's intellectual output is shared, managed, searched, and preserved. Most materials come from Rice faculty members' research, electronic theses and dissertations, and digitized collections of rare or unique books, images, musical performances, and manuscripts.

One collection that has recently experienced significant growth is Rice Undergraduate Theses. This collection highlights the work being done for a number of honors thesis projects. If you are interested in making your honors thesis available through RDSA, please see Open Invitation to Undergraduates and talk with your adviser.

News from the Digital Media Commons

The Digital Media Commons (DMC) supports the creation and use of multimedia in education, scholarship, and creative expression. Working toward this end, Commons staff provide services that include hands-on training, assistance with digital projects, and access to the essential tools for creating digital resources such as digital video and audio, images and animations, PowerPoint presentations, web pages, and more.
  • Book DMC Equipment via Library Accounts. Starting August 4th, library users can log into their library accounts, search equipment just as they search for a book, view equipment availability, then make reservations right away. Reservations can be made up to one month in advance, for up to seven days at a time. Refer to the guide Equipment Self-Booking in the Library Catalog for step-by-step instructions.
  • Print out a poster using the DMC’s online poster print request form. With the DMC Poster Print Request form, you can submit a request and come to pick up the poster when it is ready.
  • Take a free short course online or in-person. Sign up for a DMC free short course at https://library.rice.edu/requests/dmc-short-course-registration. Pay attention to the instructional modality and choose what you prefer.
