1,300 Missing Theses and Dissertations Added to Archive

The Rice Digital Scholarship Archive (RDSA) makes available approximately 12,700 Masters theses and PhD dissertations written by Rice graduate students from 1918 to the present (view the collection here).

We recently identified 1,300 theses and dissertations that were missing from the collection. They have been digitized and are now available online. Most documents are from the 1970s and 1980s, but a few are older, such as Charles Flinn Arrowood's 1921 thesis, "Thomas Hill Green's criticism of hedonism."

Fondren Supports Urban Data Platform with Digital Object Identifiers

Leveraging Fondren's DataCite membership, the Kinder Institute Urban Data Platform assigns Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to some of the datasets it publishes. These DOIs help to promote proper citation of the data. An example of a Kinder dataset with a DOI can be found at https://doi.org/10.25612/837.l66n8qa5nedl

More information about Fondren's DOI services can be found here or by contacting DSS at cds@rice.edu.

DSS Encourages Accessibility

In support of Rice University’s Strategic Plan for Accessibility, Digital Scholarship Services (DSS) encourages those submitting content to the Rice Digital Scholarship Archive to upload accessible files. Making a few adjustments to files can make content accessible to a wider range of people with disabilities and make content more usable to users in general.  To learn more about creating accessible PDFs and for information on accessibility resources, please visit our library guide. For assistance with depositing accessible PDFs, contact us at cds@rice.edu.

Harvey Memories Project Collects and Preserves Artifacts of Hurricane Harvey

Understanding Hurricane Harvey requires examining not only government and news sources, but also the testimony of those who were directly affected by the storm: residents who endured the flooding of their homes, rescuers who helped people escape the floodwaters, and volunteers who assisted with the recovery. So that historians, civic officials, students, and the public can study Hurricane Harvey’s human impact, a team of librarians and scholars has created the Harvey Memories Project (HMP). This website collects images, videos, stories and audio contributed by people affected by the storm.

HMP contains diverse items, including a video documenting a drive down a street lined with debris, a screen capture of the many emergency alerts Houstonians received during the storm, and reflections from someone involved in setting up an emergency shelter. Led by Caleb McDaniel (Associate Professor of History) and Lisa Spiro (Executive Director of Digital Scholarship Services) with project manager Ellise Brooks, HMP brings together collaborators from Rice, the University of Houston Libraries, Houston Public Library, and Harris County Public Library. In addition, Rice students assisted with curation tasks and with outreach. HMP runs on Omeka, an open source platform for creating web exhibits. Items in HMP are backed up and will be preserved using library best practices.

HMP is generously funded by the Rice Houston Engagement and Recovery Effort (HERE) and by the Rice Humanities Research Center's Public Humanities Initiative.  To explore Harvey Memories Project or contribute your own items, please visit the website.  If you’re interested in creating your own digital collection, please contact Lisa Spiro at lspiro@rice.edu.
